Your Story

Most interviews that I attended started out with this simple and open-ended question: “Tell me about yourself.”

One powerful way to answer this question is to tell your own story, one that includes your passion and help the interviewer understand who you are. I highly encourage you to take sometimes to reflect and let your inner story shines through.

I would answer this question with 3 main parts:

  1. Start with what you love doing
  2. Tell a story about WHY you are passionate about this topic
  3. Draw a clear alignment between the company’s mission statement and your passion

Example:

  1. Start with what you love doing
  2. Tell a story about WHY you are passionate about this topic
  3. Draw a clear alignment between the company’s mission statement and your passion

(1) I am quite passionate about sharing practical knowledge, especially helping young professionals to develop their careers.  (2) This passion came out of my background growing up in an economically-depressed communist country, where I witnessed an entire generation of men who were unable to find suitable jobs.  In term of experience, I started a mentoring program helping more than 100 students. (3) I am applying to Khan Academy because there is a clear alignment between my passion and your mission statement of providing world-class education to all. My passion will help me to excel in this role as I plan to make Khan Academy’s content truly accessible for international students.
