The Before version:

Greetings.

I’m writing to express interest in the Research Analyst vacancy.  I am applying to this position because I am excited by how CEB’s research provide practical insights and make impacts on business outcomes.   Here’s what I bring to the table:

  • Research and data analysis skill: 4 years of experience in academic and applied research. I conducted numerous quantitative and qualitative research (designing methods, writing surveys, interviewing participants, getting data, etc.) for my coursework and some small businesses. I am also familiar with technical tools to analyze data such as STATA, SPSS, and MS Excel. For example, at Vietnam Investments Group (Vietnam), I researched on teaching materials and developed a set of official curriculum and teaching guide in 9 subjects for a newly established international school.
  • Client-facing skill: I get used to representing my organizations and working with clients from many administrative assistant and saleperson roles. For example, I solicited 60+ vendors in a week for a youth market fair in Vietnam and handled all after-sale services to these vendors. We got a successful event with 2000+ guests.
  • Ability to work independently and in team: I am known for being proactive at work and committed for the common goals. As the Treasurer of Student Government at Randolph, I was given a year to supervise all financial operation of my organization. Even when my advisor did not closely manage me, I initiated a transformation in work procedure and collaborated with my board members to implement the changes. At the end of the year, I was recommended for setting the position on track, building a solid system to authorize and audit spending, and training the next Treasurer and officials to continue the work.

Thank you for your consideration.

Key Lessons

What Mai did well:

  • First you need to identify the three most important skills the employer is looking for. In this case, Mai did a great job at identify those skills: research skill, client-facing skill, and teamwork skill.
  • Mai also gave great examples of her past work experience. And she gave them in numbers (eg. 4 years of experience)

What Mai can improve:

  • Write shorter and more concise. Each bullet point should only be around 3 sentences. First sentence : what skill the company is looking for. Second sentence: why you are a good fit. Third sentence: give an example.
  • Writing in a concise manner is an art. So you need to just practice and practice. This is very important because the recruiter is going to to spend 30 second to scan your resume. You need to make it very fast and easy for them to read
  • She needs to point out the impact. For example, she designed training curriculums. But what is the impact? Is the school still using this? Does it help the students to learn faster and better?
